Take Action to protect TCHC tenants and their homes!

This year has been a rollercoaster for tenants living in Toronto Community Housing.

We’ve seen the forced removal of TCHC board members, including two tenant-elected tenant board members, the approval by TCHC and the City of the sale of 22 homes and now the approval by TCHC of over 1,000 homes across the City. Throughout this year, we’ve heard some City Councillors talk about looking at selling off more than just the scattered homes and suggest we consider the sale of apartment buildings and providing rent subsidies for rent geared to income tenants.

This has been quite the tough year. But as we head into the holiday season, we are encouraged and hopeful.

We are hearing from tenants and the community that the rushed sale of our homes is not supported by thousands in the City.
People want to have a meaningful discussion about the real issues facing affordable housing in the City of Toronto - one that considers building and maintaining social housing, not a rushed mass sell-off of thousands of homes, and forced removal of families.

We have a lot of momentum heading into the holiday season and New Year and we need your help!

WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY!

SEND YOUR COUNCILLOR AND THE MAYOR A MESSAGE: LET THEM KNOW THAT WE’RE NOT FOR SALE!
Your Councillor has the power to stop the sale of our homes. There are many alternative solutions to dealing with the repairs problems in TCHC that do not involve the sale of our homes (see attached Globe and Mail article). Let them know that you do not support the sale of any homes in TCHC and ask them for their support. Ask your Councillor and the Mayor to vote against the recommendation when it comes to Council.

To find contact information for your Councillor and the Mayor, visit http:/app.toronto.ca/wards/jsp/wards.jsp or call 311. Please copy socialhousingtenants@gmail.com on your emails.

SIGN OUR PETITION – HELP US GET TO 10,000!!
The number of petitions signed in support of tenants and against the sale of our homes is growing steadily. Help us get to 10,000!
Click here http://tenantsforsocialhousing.com/action/petition-2/ to sign our online petition and to download a hard copy petition to collect signatures from your family, friends, neighbours and coworkers!

UPCOMING MEETINGS

Join Tenants for Social Housing at these meetings and join the discussion on the alternatives to selling off people’s homes and dealing with the large repairs problem in TCHC.
Share all the reasons why rushing a decision to sell-off social housing is wrong. Let them know that it hurts families and that there are other real solutions for dealing with the issues.
