PRE-TEEN WILDERNESS ADVENTURE SENIOR CAMP COUNSELLOR (Youth Position Aged 16-30)

SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, Children, Youth and Adults (CYA), is responsible for the development and implementation of summer leadership and wilderness adventure programming for youth 12 to 16 years of age.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plans and implements creative and stimulating leadership and outdoor recreation program activities in consultation with the Program Manager CYA.
2. Responsible for planning and facilitating an eight week youth wilderness adventure project including an overnight camping retreat and a 6-day canoeing trip to Algonquin Park.
3. Facilitate youth input in program development and program implementation with the goal
of developing social/life skills.
4. Supervise the program areas and provide leadership and guidance to program participants
5. Maintains daily participant attendance and relevant registration records.
6. Refers and documents all serious encounters, ie. accidents, conversations with parents, incidents among children, etc. to the Program Manager CYA.
7. Work cooperatively with a Co-Facilitator and actively participate in staff meetings and
professional development opportunities.
8. Performs any other duties as assigned including maintenance and clean-up of program areas.
9. Commitment to receiving current C.P.R./First Aid Certification.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Enrolled in a Degree or Diploma in a human service discipline (e.g. Recreation, Child and Youth Worker, Education or other) and a minimum one year of experience working with youth ages 12-16.
Must meet the criteria as set out by the funders. Youth between the ages of 16 and 30 who are full-time students and returning to school in the Fall 2009.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong communication skills and ability to connect with young people in a social/recreational environment
Demonstrated background in planning and programming for youth between the ages of 12 and 16 years.
Knowledge and understanding of outdoor- and eco-education principles including wilderness survival training, canoeing, rock climbing, camping.
Strong needs assessment, program planning, and facilitation skills
Knowledge and understanding of non-violent crisis intervention, anger management, and creative problem solving strategies
Proven experience working within inner city youth from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Lifeguarding certification an asset.
Salary Scale: Summer Contract/Student
$10.49 + 6% vacation and mandatory Employment Standards Benefits
Start Date: June 22 - August 27, 2010: 40 hrs/wk
