Lakeshore Arts is currently accepting applications for an Artist to lead a public art project for youth to begin in October and finish in early December, 2010. You will work in collaboration with a creative writer and a group of 30 students to create a text-based public artwork to be installed on the exterior of a local high school in South Etobicoke. The artwork can be two or three dimensional, sculptural or shaped- we are open to innovative proposals and unique use of substrates. The project will require approximately 60 hours in total, during school hours.

Responsibilities:

-Develop a timeline and structure for the project that ensures the final product is a high-quality, coherent work of art that enhances the exterior of the school

- Collaborate with a team of stakeholders (including Lakeshore Arts staff, other artists, teachers, administrators and students) to ensure that the final product is representative of the school and the community

-Provide students with an understanding of public and community arts initiatives

-Source appropriate materials according to the project budget

-Provide instructions for installation to the school

-Set a positive example for students by ensuring that all participants are valued, treated in a non-judgmental manner, and provided equal opportunity to collaborate

Requirements:

-An active artistic practice

-knowledge of relevant materials

-extensive experience working with youth

-an interest in community arts

-excellent organizational and communication skills

-strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

-a current Police Safety check (or be prepared to apply for one).

Applicants are asked to email a CV, cover letter and a proposal outlining possible concept(s) for the project, including approximate material costs by September 13th. We appreciate all applications, but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
