Background:
The Ontario Council for International Cooperation (OCIC) is a coalition of Ontario-based voluntary organizations committed to achieving global development in a peaceful and healthy environment, with social justice, human dignity and participation for all.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Public Engagement Coordinator will work closely with OCIC members and stakeholders in achieving our collective networking, capacity-building and public engagement goals.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic organizer with proven experience facilitating projects with diverse stakeholders. S/he will have creative ideas, strong communication skills, and knowledge of international development issues. As a key member of a small staff team, s/he must be able to work independently on a variety of tasks, and to motivate others to participate.
Specific initiatives will include, but not be limited to: collaborating with other groups in the planning of the 2010 Peoples Summit; coordinating Diaspora Youth Speak – a project that uses the arts to engage youth from diasporic communities on global issues; helping to plan, coordinate and facilitate a fall Global Citizens Forum and winter International Development Week programme; in collaboration with the Inter-Council Network across Canada, engaging Ontario youth to participate in a national Video Challenge that seeks to sensitize and engage Canadians in global development issues; coordinating the publication of OCIC’s e-Magazine – iAM: ideas, action, movement; supporting the work of OCIC working groups and regional networks, as assigned; and providing overall support and guidance to other OCIC activities on an needs basis, including the AGM.
Within these, the Public Engagement Coordinator is charged with the following areas of responsibility:
* Liaising with members and other stakeholders, and developing relevant partnerships throughout planning, implementation and evaluation of all initiatives;
* Organizing and supporting members in organizing PE activities as above (and emerging);
* Contributing to the development and implementation of OCIC’s public engagement and networking programming;
* Creating appropriate communications strategies and materials, including website content, for each activity;
* Documenting best practices/lessons learned;
* Assisting with follow-up activities, such as synthesis of evaluations, preparation of financial and final reports/items;
* Providing administrative and programming support to the Executive Director, Board of Directors and its Committees, as requested;
* Representing OCIC, the Executive Director, Board of Directors and its Committees at events or external meetings when requested; and
* Responding to general telephone, email and fax inquiries.
Desired Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
* A minimum of 2 years recent and related experience;
* Knowledge of international development issues and experience working with international cooperation organizations;
* Demonstrated ability to build relationships, work as a team player and develop consensus with diverse stakeholders;
* Knowledge of working within an anti-oppression framework;
* Demonstrated experience in public awareness/engagement, especially with youth;
* Demonstrated experience coordinating activities and events;
* Demonstrated (creative) writing, editing and public presentation skills;
* Demonstrated experience with new media and the arts;
* Demonstrated report writing and financial management skills;
* Interpersonal and cross-cultural communication strengths;
* Capacity to work collaboratively with diverse groups;
* Detail-oriented, with ability to organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, monitor progress towards goals and track information;
* Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, e-mail, web publishing packages); * Knowledge of global education resources;
* Enthusiastic and creative;
* Able to travel;
* Drivers license an asset;
* Multilingual an asset.
Salary: $35,000 annually (pro-rated) + benefits
