SPECIAL PROJECT CONTRACT (18 POSITIONS)
Reports to:
Toronto Newcomer Initiative – Settlement Services: Project Coordinator
Primary Function:
To support the Project Coordinator in the planning, development, promotion,
implementation and evaluation of City and community programs for newcomers.
To participate in all aspects of the development and implementation of
orientation and referral services, community outreach, education and family
support components of City and settlement service delivery.
Background:
The Toronto Newcomer Initiative- Settlement Workers in City Facilities Project is a short term, 6.5
month project that will combine systems –wide change in the delivery of City services with direct
settlement service delivery. The project itself will test good practices in settlement service, identify
common trends and strategies while having a City-wide and integrated reach. This project and its
approach will harness the energies and benefits of practices currently underway, while maximizing the
coordination of existing connections, networks, learning’s and resources that City services may adopt
as part of new practice at the end of the project term. This project will work with three City
departments: Parks, Forestry and Recreation, Children’s Services and Public Health.
Responsibilites:
1. Provide supportive counseling and referral services to clients
2. Plan and deliver group programs/workshops such as settlement orientation, information
sessions, workshops, newcomer support networks, self-help initiatives, and
social/cultural/recreational activities (number of group programs to be assigned by the Project
Coordinator)
3. Conduct outreach to immigrant and newcomer communities
4. Liaise and develop a network with other associations, settlement service networks and
community agencies
5. Prepare monthly statistics and share learnings with City staff on a monthly basis. Document and
provide feedback and guidance and recommendations to City staff on eliminating barriers to
access of City services based on formal and informal feedback
6. Ensure supplies of government forms are available for clients
7. Develop flyers and resources relevant to newcomers, frequently update such information and
maintain the resources booths and boards in the office and the centre
8. Assist City staff and the Project Coordinator to analyze the monthly funder reports and statistics
and provide recommendations for improvement
9. Assist City staff and Project Coordinator and the Project Team in the development of and
securing resources for the implementation of relevant programs and services that may emerge
during the course of the Project
10. Support, collaborate and provide as needed in consultation with Project Coordinator, direct
services to relevant City services that require a newcomer focus
11. Provide general administrative support to the Project Coordinator and Project Team
12. Attend meetings/workshops on behalf of the Project Team as appropriate
13. Attend staff meetings and work evening and weekends when required
14. Other duties as assigned
Qualfications:
1. Minimum of 2 years direct experience in the field of social or community work
2. Post-secondary education in a relevant field an asset
3. Must have excellent written and oral communications skills
4. Experience in presentation and organizational skills
5. Some demonstrated research experience
6. Excellent interpersonal skills required for supervision of part-time staff or volunteers
7. Understanding of issues facing immigrants and newcomers
8. Flexibility to adapt to trends and needs of changing newcomer groups
9. Demonstrated experience to function in a team setting
10. Ability to relate to clients from diverse cultural and socio- economic backgrounds.
11. Knowledge of the local community is an asset
12. Ability to speak a second language preferred (Somali, Tamil, French, Mandarin, Urdu
and/or others)
Other
40 hours/week [occasional evening and weekends required]
Rate: $20.84/hour
Benefits: 4% vacation pay
