 Abrigo Centre’s youth program (Dufferin Mall Youth Services - DMYS) is a collaborative and innovative service for youth and their families located in the Dufferin Mall.  This unique model provides individual and group counselling, peer support, leadership training, employment preparation, recreational and social programming in a safe and supportive drop-in environment.  We are currently seeking a creative and passionate Youth Health Promoter/ Facilitator who will work with our youth in developing a promotional program delivering information at the elementary and high school level on the issues of tobacco/substance/alcohol misuse and surrounding mental health issues.  This is a three day a week, temporary position.

 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Outreach, interview and contract 15 youth for project
  • Work with youth, three days per week, after school in developing creative drama/multi-media presentation on issues of tobacco/substance misuse and mental health issues
  • Work with youth in developing educational material/pamphlet on issues of tobacco/substance/alcohol misuse.
  • Develop evaluation tool to be administered pre and post workshop to audience members
  • Assist youth group in facilitating workshop/question & answer period after each performance
  • Accompany youth to performances and assist group in facilitating workshop/question and answer period after each performance
  • Follow-up with school administration for evaluation purposes
  • Prepare program materials, document case notes, write reports and perform related administrative duties
  • Analyze evaluation material collected and write a concluding report on project

 

 Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in one of the human services profession/minimum of 3 years experience in related field
  • Experience in working with youth from culturally/socially diverse backgrounds and multi-barriered/marginalized youth
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of societal and relational issues that impact youth and their development
  • Possesses excellent youth group facilitation skills
  • Commitment to encouraging a youth voice and supporting youth led initiatives
  • Experience working through drama/dance/art/media to engage youth groups in dialoguing on socially and relationally relevant issues
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency and keyboarding skills including Excel, Microsoft and Internet applications
  • Knowledge and understanding of Portuguese speaking communities an asset
  • A police record check will be required

 

Please note:

  • The assessment will include an interview and a written and/or practical test. 
  • This is a part-time, 24 hour per week temporary assignment for one (1) year.
