Creating Opportunities for Homeless Youth

Eva’s Initiatives is an award-winning, innovative organization operating three youth shelters, an employment training program and providing a range of specialized services to youth. Eva’s Phoenix is an extended shelter and employment training facility for homeless youth. We are currently looking to add to our vibrant and enthusiastic staff team by filling the following position:

Youth Services Worker (2 Temporary fulltime positions)

(Note: 1 position to terminate approximately March 26, 2011; 2nd position to terminate approximately February 21, 2011)

 

This position is responsible for providing counselling and support to residents with a particular focus on overcoming the barriers to staying housed and maintaining employment.  Youth Services Workers are also responsible for ensuring the shelter is a safe residence. They work with residents in developing and implementing a plan that leads to a more stable lifestyle. Additional responsibilities include case management, general shelter and administrative duties. 

 

The position works in a shelter environment with its associated stresses and with youth who may at-times be in crisis and may demonstrate related behaviours.  Staff will at all times be responsible for following safe work practices for their own safety and the safety of other staff and clients.

Qualifications:

         Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in a related field

▪ Experience in supportive counselling and group work, as well as case management

▪ Experience working with homeless and at-risk youth, preferably in a residential setting with sound understanding of related issues and resources

▪ Strong computer and documentation skills relevant to counselling

▪ Experience working with diverse populations with sound understanding of principles of anti-oppression

▪ Demonstrated experience providing individual supportive counselling

▪ Experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution and de-escalation skills/techniques

▪ Demonstrated experience working with a team within a constructive communication model

▪ Ability to perform duties of position that include: bending; stretching; pulling; pushing; climbing stairs; cleaning; lifting >5lbs.

▪ All mandatory hostel training such as UMAB, First Aid/CPR

▪ Second language and Class ‘G’ Driver’s Licence (with clean abstract) is an asset

 Salary is based on annual amount of $36,842.30 plus 5% in lieu of benefits with paid vacation and sick days accrued based on time in the position.  This is a unionized position.
