Young people point the way to changes in foster care

From a Toronto Star article:

Young people from Ontario's foster care system are "invisible heroes" whose stories of pain and perseverance can lead the way to positive change, a Queen's Park hearing was told Friday.

"This is an opportunity for Ontario to lead in how we take care of the province’s children," provincial Child Advocate Irwin Elman said at the opening of two days of youth-led hearings into the challenges these youth face.

"They are going to lead us to that opportunity if we allow them," he added.

Former Crown wards who addressed the unprecedented hearings spoke of the anger and confusion they felt entering care, then of the sense of abandonment when they were forced to leave foster homes at 18 and fend for themselves financially and emotionally at 21.
