 Study links gender-based violence with higher rates of mental health problems in women

Results of an Australian study indicate that women who have experienced gender-based violence are more than twice as likely to have a mental health disorder compared to those with no history of gender-based violence. Those who experienced more than one type of gender-based violence had even higher rates of mental health problems.

 

The study of 4,451 women ages 16 to 85 was led by Susan Rees, PhD at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The women in the study were representative of the Australian population, and were interviewed in person by trained interviewers.
